These are pictures taken by satellite dish service technician Mark Erney on a trip to a remote arctic gold mining camp near Baker Lake, Nunavut, Canada in May of 2010. I fell in love with the arctic on my trips there. The Inuit natives, Canadians, Finlanders, and all the other people I met are so nice and friendly. I can't wait for my next trip up there. The pictures start out with two photos leaving the mine camp driving to Baker Lake. The third picture is looking out over the frozen lake. The next photos are pictures of a short walk around town. Then photos of driving back to the mining camp where we saw some carabou in a herd near the road. The last two pictures are of the satellite dishes I was working on for the mine camp. My absolute favorite picture from the whole trip is the arctic bunny rabbit that just sat there and posed for me. I'm going to have that picture made into a poster. It's amazing where these large gold mining companies will go to get the gold. And this is one of the finest operations I have ever seen. They basically built their own city in the middle of the arctic. They even have their own air strip and runway. Their camp is super clean and very well maintained. Modern living spaces with TV in every room and private bathrooms for every two rooms. They even have a huge gym with an indoor running track. Really a first class operation and essential to the economy of Baker Lake. I wish I could show you pictures from inside the buildings, but because that is proprietary client information, I cannot publish photos from inside the camp buildings. Can you imagine what it would be like to get caught in a whiteout or blizzard on this ride? There is absolutely nothing but snow, ice and tundra for over 70 km in between Baker Lake and the mining camp. I really need to learn how to build an igloo from the Inuit natives. They told me how to pick the snow, but I want to learn hands on. |
